Live in an Opium Haze

A site dedicated to the Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare where we attempt to piece together all the clues Cassie has thrown at us to link the Infernal Devices to the Mortal Instruments. We post daily theories about the series and upcoming books, theories you your self probably would never have thought of. We also warmly invite you to message us and we will always post YOUR theories with credit to you of course. We are trying to create one page with everyones idea's and speculations so we can all try to make sense and link the infernal devices to the mortal instruments.

Theory 10: Cecily Herondale & Gabriel Lightwood

Anyone who hasn’t read Clockwork Prince and doesn’t want any spoilers should stop reading NOW!

I wasn’t at all suprised when Cassie introduced the mysterious Cecily into the series and revealed that she was Will’s sister. Not sounding cocky it was just very well planned out and made sense. However her purpose in the story is a little fuzzy but thats another theory for later.

Clockwork Prince explores many relationships between previously mentioned and new characters. The auidence is also furthur introduced to the Lightwood family and more information is shared on their circumstances. Gideons relationship with Sophie was such a subtle yet crucial part of the story. By seeing how the menace family had been influenced by their father Benedict, I was able to put a fairly reasonable theory together.

The scene where Will, Tessa and Charlotte visit the Lightwoods to talk about the insitiute shows a different side to Gabriel and changed our overall opinion of him. Gabriel is clearly arrgoant and stubborn however his malicious manner is clearly shaped and influenced by his father, underneath it all he cares for his family and as hard as he tries to hate he simply can’t. He is therefore loyal and kind hearted. We believe that in Clockwork Prince we will see Gabriel undergo a major character change as he will rise to stand next to his brother and fight alongside the Institute.

My theory is that in book 3: Clockwork Princess, something will drive Gabriel into the institute where he will meet Cecily Herondale. I believe that because of Will’s public humiliation of Gabriels sister, he will try to get under Will’s skin by messing around with Cecily. When Gabriel and Cecily begin to spend time together it is very possible that Gabriel will fall in love with her, like Gideon did for Sophie; and that is where the current Lightwoods from the Mortal Instruments will have descended from.

Because the Infernal Devices will have a heart shattering conclusion, as we all know that our favourite characters, exluding Tessa and Magnus, must die and be dead when the Mortal Instruments is taking place. As Tessa lives (and we’re hoping that Will or Jem will find someway to remain immortal, which could be discovered in COLS) its still going to devastate readers when we realise Tessa is alone for eternity therefore Cassie must have some form of happy ending which can be seen through Charlotte and Henry and their child, Gideon and Sophie and Gabriel and Cecily. Is this how the Lightwoods name will be restored?

new theory coming soon!

“It’s not that,” said Magnus. “There are some people — people the universe seems to have singled out for special destinies. Special favors and special torments. God knows we’re all drawn toward what’s beautiful and broken; I have been, but some people cannot be fixed. Or if they can be, it’s only by love and sacrifice so great it destroys the giver.”

“As Tessa grows closer to Jem, Will is driven further toward the brink of madness by jealousy and guilt.” Clockwork Prince

“Now very much against her will, she thought of the way Jace had looked at her then, the blaze of faith in his eyes, his belief in her. He had always thought she was strong. He had showed it in everything he did, in every look and every touch. Simon had faith in her too, yet when he’d held her, it had been as if she were something fragile, something made of delicate glass. But Jace had held her with all the strength he had, never wondering if she could take it—he’d known she was as strong has he was.” — Cassandra Clare (City of Glass)

Theory 9: Are the Lightwoods related to Will Herondale?

This theory has been requested a lot latley and the reason why we haven’t posted it, isn’t because we don’t think it’s true or relevant we do), but because we wanted to think about it enough to get it right.

So in the Mortal Instruments, Alec, Isabelle, Max, Robert and Maryse all have Black hair and a few of them have Blue eyes, and everybody should know that Will Herondale also has Black hair and Blue eye. blue eyes are very rare as it is a complicated gene that is easily dominated by Brown or Hazel.

The difference between the Lightwoods and the Herondales is that the Lightwoods got darker colouring which is possible it happens all the time, but the Herondales got lighter which happens to one or two family members by chance but shouldn’t affect the whole family line in just 3 generations.

However Gabriel Lightwood (The Infernal Devices) has brown hair and green eyes which really shouldn’t have changed so much in a few generations, although it is possible. Surley there is some big hint behind physical appearence, Cassie has this whole fantasy world in her hands so she couldn’t possibly have written it as a
coincidence.

A few quotes from Magnus also hint that the Lightwoods are linked to Will Herondale as he is occasionally making comments on how Alec reminds him of someone, and how Will and Alec’s looks are his favourite combination.

As its been made clear Will Herondale and Gabriel Lightwood do not get along AT ALL. Infact Will doesn’t get along with any of the Lightwoods. Why? Because something happened between him and Gabriel’s sister, whose name remains anonymous.

Some people believe that the Lightwood’s sister’s name, is Cecily. Will is occasionally caught muttering this name which leads fans to believe that he once loved her.

We thinks its VERY possible that Will has gotten the Lightwood sister pregnant with a son, which would explain her absence from Clave meetings and from the story in general, as in those days pregant teenagers were often confined and hidden/kept from society as often as possible. This would also explain the Lightwood’s complete, unforgivable hatred for Will as he would have threatned their families reputation and name. It also compliments this quote that hints Will has been sexual and intimate with the Lightwood sister,

“I just wondered,” Gabriel said, in a more subdued voice, “if perhaps you have ever had enough.”

“Enough of what?”

“Enough of behaving as you do.”

Will crossed his arms over his chest. His eyes glinted dangerously. “Oh, I can never get enough,” he said. “Which, incidentally, is what your sister said to me when—”

The carriage door flew open. A hand shot out, grabbed Will by the back of the shirt, and hauled him inside.

Could this have a minor affect on Will’s behaviour towards Tessa? We know Will has some serious issues that are yet to be resolved and were sure his reluctance towards Tessa is very resonable and complicated, but could the idea that he got the Lightwood girl pregant contribute to his reluctance, as he truely loves Tessa and wouldn’t wish her a similar fate which involves him complicating her life and hurting her?

If the Lightwood girl is infact pregant with a boy it would make complete sense as to why the Lightwoods now share Will’s genetics. This would also make Alec and Jace related which probably contributed as to why they became such strong Parabati.

We’d like to thank Nichole for messaging us and contributing to this theory. We did read your message and decided to post this asap. We loved your theory and we think it’s extremly likely. x

Hey guys sorry for the pause in theories. were all supperr busy with school work at the moment its just crazy. weve also used this time to quickly brush over the books to get new ideas and make them more accurate like getting quotes and evidence anyway  theres plleenntyy so we will deffinatley post some new ones later tonight x

Theory 8: Who is the ACTUAL Herondale Ancestor?

note - some people are questioning this theory because Jem originally had dark colouring. Ok, this is just a theory. Also the question still stands “Why arn’t Will Herondale’s genetics being passed down through his family line?”

We all know that Jace Wayland/Lightwood/Morgenstern is actually Jace Herondale. But why aren’t Will Herondale’s genetics being passed down throughout his family line?
You’re probably thinking “yeah but he has ANGEL BLOOD making him light duh!?”
But why were Stephen Herondale and all other Herondale’s (like Imogen, Stephen’s mother and were pretty sure she didnt marry into the family) described as having light colouring?

  • Maybe Will’s genetic’s died outafter…. 3 generations which doesnt really make sense, as he has a high percentage of passing on his looks and it wouldnt die out so fast. (Dark colouring is a dominant gene which means it’s more likely to be passed on to a child, and the male gene is more dominant than the female meaning that children have a higher percentage of their fathers genetics than their mothers).
  • He isn’t the Herondale who produced the descendants, maybe his sister did?
  • Or maybe like many other people choose to believe he was confronted by “the angel” and his colouring turned light. But why was he confronted by an angel? Seems a little weird.

Perhaps, PERHAPS it wasn’t Will confronted by the angel, perhaps it was Jem, being saved from his disease recieving a star shaped scar that would be passed down through generations. We’re starting to think that (dont hate us, WE LOVE HIM!) Will, will die. We think he’s going to die in a process that will save Jem’s life and Jem having respected him so strongly eventually moves and could change his name, perhaps to Jem Herondale or maybe names his child Will Herondale or just gives it the last name of Herondale, seeing as they were so close and to let Will’s family name live on. Don’t think were crazy, it’s just a possibility and would explain the genetics being passed on as they compliment Jem’s apperance. Jem would eventually have died of mortality which makes us believe he didn’t end up with Tessa. However if you believe that Brother Zachariah is Will (which may have been the sacfrafice for Will to save Jem’s life), whose physical apperance matches Will’s almost perfectly, then Will lives on in a way and might eventually be reconciled with Tessa.

We believe Cassie is in a way, going to give Will AND Jem fans what they want whilst trying to be unpredictable. By temporarily killing off Will, Tessa gets a chance to be with Jem for a period of time, only to discover their love is completley innocent and not nearly as magnetic as her’s and Will’s or maybe she isn’t ageing and he is, so she lets him go, meaning Jem could go on and marry someone else, perhaps Sophie and have a child, call it a Herondale and continue Will’s line. we know jem origianally had dark genetics however if he had a child with a blond woman then her genetics could have been passed on. And then in Mortal Instruments, Tessa’s character is given a second chance to get with Will and discover a way to save him and be together. So in the end it would be a tear jerking series but would eventually leave everyone happy as they got what they wanted.

We dont know.. But it sounds interesting and Im pretty sure Im going crazy with theories :) x

holysexywater asked: OMG CC just tweeted this
'RT @Ifirifis0: " will Tessa change in a male character in CP1?" In a future book, she will.'
Totally supports the Tessa is Ragnor Fell theory!

yewww! ahahaha :D x

Theory 7: The Gray Book

It looks like the Infernal Devices may have a deeper meaning and connection to the Mortal Instruments than we originally expected. In the first three books of the Mortal Instruments we hear a lot about the Gray book.

“The Shadowhunters obey the laws set down in the Gray Book, given to them by the angel: their mandate is to protect our world from the interdimensional parasites they call demons, who travel from world to world, razing and destroying everything in their path. Theirs is also the task of keeping the peace among the warring Downworlders: the human-demon crossbreeds we know as warlocks, vampires, werewolves, and faeries”.– http://www.mortalinstruments.com/mortalworld.html

If the book was named after a colour would it not be the GREY book? Not the Gray book?

Also,

“…the task of keeping the peace among the warring Downworlders: the human-demon crossbreeds we know as warlocks, vampires, werewolves, and faeries”

This is not an official rule that Shadowhunters live by in Clockwork Angel which leaves us to believe that the rules in the Gray Book haven’t been written or enforced yet.

Tessa Gray loves to read, she lives to read books and is highly intelligent. Could her intelligence lead to her eventually penning or having a meaningful significance to the Gray book? This also encourages the fact that Tessa may be part Shadowhunter and could possibly have had a skill similar to Clary’s in how she can create runes. We know that the Shadowhunters would have had to learn runes, but it could have been a different book with limited, simpler runes. Perhaps the White book (which in COG is supposed to be in Ragnor Fell’s possession), but we think that was just a spell book, and perhaps another one of Tessa’s works.

However, Magnus Bane (the High Warlock of Brooklyn)… are said to have copies of the Gray book… The Gray book is sacred, and should be handled carefully.” - http://mortalinstruments.wikia.com/wiki/The_Gray_Book

Magnus will become very close friends with Tessa throughout the Infernal Devices which leads us to believe that she made and entrusted him with a copy of the Gray Book. In City of Bones, Clary reads the Gray book and has a picture memory to it, if the book contained an image of the author, Tessa, could this be how Clary recognized her in City of Glass? Also in City of Glass, Magnus needs the White Book that is supposed to be in Ragnor Fell’s possession, but instead in Valentine’s home, if you incorporate our Tessa is Ragnor Fell theory, you get that Tessa may just be the author of spell books, she is happiest when reading and learning, which makes sense that she would turn to writing.

“…the Gray Book, given to them by the angel…”

We are almost certain that either Clockwork Prince or Clockwork Princess will involve Will, being confronted by an angel. Who this angel is, is a mystery. It could be Tessa, an angel that may have been summoned or appeared, or Tessa’s mother Elizabeth who is believed to be part angel making Tessa a type of Shadowhunter which we find most likely. Mortmain says that Elizabeth didn’t know what she was, which we think means she could have been part angel or full angel living on earth and not known about it. Her necklace which she passed on to Tessa, the Clockwork Angel, strongly symbolizes this.

We think that Will may be injured and have to be healed by the angel which then will give him the first Herondale scar that is still being passed down, as it is on Jace’s arm. We know it’s far fetched but Tessa in someway could be the angel. She could pass on the Gray book to the Shadowhunters and enforce the rule that they have to protect downworlders as she has downworlder friends. Everyone’s so focused on Tessa being a demon, what if she’s the complete opposite? x

Brain overload.

kind of what my mind looks like right about now:

The Gray Book, book of runes. Tessa Gray. Magnus has a copy. Magnus was Tessa’s close friend. The book was given to them by an angel, Tessa doesnt have a demon mark which means she could have angel blood, clockwork angel? The herondale scar is because an ancestor came in contact with an angel. Will?

It’s a work in progress, come back later for a theory. x
